IGY6: The Importance of Checking on Your Battle Buddies
As veterans, active firearms community members, Leo, and first responders, we understand the unique challenges that come with serving our country and communities. We have all experienced the highs and lows that come with this profession, and unfortunately, some of us may have lost battle buddies along the way.
This is where the IGY6 campaign comes in. IGY6 stands for "I Got Your Six," a military term that means "I've got your back." The campaign was created to raise awareness of veteran suicide and encourage people to check on their battle buddies.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an average of 20 veterans die by suicide each day. This is a staggering statistic that highlights the importance of checking on our brothers and sisters in arms. But it's not just veterans who are at risk. First responders and law enforcement officers also have higher rates of suicide compared to the general population.
So why is it so important to check on our battle buddies? For one, it lets them know that they are not alone. Sometimes all it takes is a simple phone call or text message to remind someone that they are valued and loved. It also gives them an opportunity to talk about what they are going through and get the help they need.
But how do you check on someone who may be struggling with mental health issues? Here are a few tips:
Reach out regularly: Make it a point to check on your battle buddies regularly, even if it's just a quick text message or phone call.
Listen actively: If someone does open up to you, be sure to listen without judgment and let them know that you care.
Offer support: Encourage your battle buddies to seek help if they need it and offer to assist them in finding resources.
Educate yourself: Learn about the warning signs of suicide and mental health issues so that you can recognize when someone may be in trouble.
Remember, we are all in this together. By checking on our battle buddies and supporting each other, we can help prevent suicide and create a stronger, more resilient community. So let's all commit to saying IGY6 and looking out for each other.
